Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)
While the Sugar Engineers' Library joined the WAP era some months ago, it seems sugar technologists have not fallen in love with this technology. In fact, I suspect a large degree of WAPathy but the wapsite is being updated daily.

Wireless Internet Gateway (WIG)
WAP has not proven popular generally, although there are some sugar technologists making use of the above service. The main reasons for the slow uptake of WAP are probably the cost of new WAP enabled handsets, and the cost of using the service. There is an alternative that may become widely used. Known as Wireless Internet Gateway (WIG) this service uses Short Message Service (SMS) (aka text messages) as the communication channel in the GSM network.
The handset sends the URL request to the WIG server as an SMS, The WIG server then translates this SMS request into a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http) request which is passed to the web server (content provider) the content provider serves an http response (Wireless Markup Language (WML) document) to the WIG server which translates this response to one or more SMS which are sent to the handset.
The SMS is displayed by a Wireless Internet Browser (WIB) which is a small software application on the Subsciber Identification Module (SIM) card. For this to all work the SIM card must have the WIB browser loaded, the hand set must be SIM Application Toolkit (SAT) compliant (most currently available handsets are), and your service provider must offer the service.
