Brown Sugar is a serious contribution despite limitations

The screening of Brown Sugar Too Bitter For Me in Georgetown last week marks not only the release of the latest work in the building of a Guyanese film industry, but the third attempt to treat issues and struggles in the sugar industry in a movie. This film continues to reveal a number of the imperfections that still accompany the noble efforts at national cinematography, although it nevertheless has to be regarded as an achievement. Despite limitations it is a contribution that can be taken seriously. Not all the previous efforts fall in that category.

Egypt to have new $372m sugar plant

The Islamic Corporation for Development of the Private Sector (ICD) has announced plans to invest $372m into building a mega sugar production facility in Egypt, Arab News has reported. Other shareholders of Al-Nouran Sugar include the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, the Egyptian Sugar & Integrated Industries Co, and Al-Nouran Multitrading, a private sector sugar trading house in Egypt. The project involves the construction of a new sugar production facility in Al-Sharkia governorate and the acquisition of an affiliated beet agricultural company. Production will reduce Egypt\'s reliance on imported sugar by 25% from the current one million tonnes annually, while exports of by-products will generate savings to the balance of payments of up to about $250m annually. The project is expected to be completed by Q4 2015.

Sweet time at sugar plant

Williamsburg was a hot spot Tuesday night when guests gathered at the former Domino Sugar Factory on Kent Street for the annual Creative Time gala honoring Julian Schnabel, who took his pregnant fiance, May Andersen. The old plant is now owned by Creative Time co-chair Jed Walentas, who plans to turn the cavernous space into offices, as part of an 11-acre development including apartments. Here\'s hoping Antonio Reynoso can afford one. He\'s running for the City Council seat in Williamsburg to replace Diana Reyna, who\'s leaving due to term limits and for whom Reynoso is chief of staff. Reynoso told us at the gala he just moved in with his sister after living with his mother for years, because he can\'t afford his own place in the neighborhood. He also revealed, I recently sold my car, so I ride a bike around. Reynoso mingled with art dealers, architects, developers and celebrities, including Andre Balazs, Marisa Tomei, Arden Wohl, Stella Schnabel and Luke Janklow.

Very dismal performance at all sugar estates in 2012 but especially at Skeldon flagship

All estates are showing signs of poor labour turnout. In the year 2012 the industry showed the factories standing idle, out of cane and not grinding, during the first and second crops a total of 10,527 hours. The actual time the factories worked during the year was 21,623 hours. This means that due to an acute shortage of labour to cut the cane the factories were standing idle 50% of the time during the crops waiting for the cane to be delivered, needless to say that during a substantial part of this time the factory\'s workers had to be paid for standing by doing nothing.

The EU\'s sugar ruling that\'s left a bitter taste at Tate & Lyle

Forty years after the disappearance of the old London docks, there still stands, on the Thames, one last, giant working survivor. The great ships still bring it their cargoes up the river, just as they always have, from former colonies and faraway tropics. And for a local working-class community that never really recovered from the demise of the docks, it still employs nearly a thousand East Enders, just as it always has, in Britain\'s worst unemployment blackspot.
