Area Manager Refinery
PURPOSE
Manages the raw sugar retrieval and refining areas of the plant up to and including the bulk sugar loading facility within established specifications and budget parameters.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages the refinery area of the plant including bulk sugar loading.
- Maintains Refinery operations to ensure products produced meet established specifications.
- Manages final product inventories to ensure adequate supply.
- Manages all aspects of customer satisfaction including product quality, shipping, truck and rail car capabilities, etc.
- Manages and leads refinery personnel; nurtures a high performance work team environment.
- Ensures that raw materials, i.e., chemicals, resins, etc., are utilized such that the final products of granulated sugar, liquid sucrose, affination syrup and blackstrap molasses meet quality parameters and that costs are controlled within budget parameters or better.
- Maintains processing equipment on a day-to-day basis.
- Partners with Maintenance Manager to achieve plant efficiencies and asset life.
Direct Supervision
Staff of 40 to 50 consisting of: 5-6 Supervisors; 1 Process Engineer; 45-55 Employees Indirect
Budget
- Operating Budget - $5 Million
- Capital Budget - $3 Million
- Production Volume – 1 Million Tons of Raw Sugar Annually
REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge
- Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
- Extensive knowledge of the sugar refining process.
- Minimum 5 to 10 years of managerial experience working in the sugar refining or industrial processing industry.
- Experience with general food safety programs such as HACCP
- Knowledge of applicable federal regulations
- Knowledge of Environmental Compliance issues as they relate to departmental issues

- Demonstrated well developed management and leadership skills
- Team-based management knowledge and experience required
- Solid written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Experience with distributed control systems.
- Must be computer literate with MS Office – Word, Excel
- Ability to prepare and work with departmental budgets.
- Ability to lead High Performance Work Teams

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is a manufacturing plant environment. Exposure to high temperatures, moving machinery, moving equipment, heights and confined spaces.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to speak and communicate verbally with others.
- Ability to utilize basic office equipment.
- Ability to climb to heights above 30 ft.
